TSMC and Nvidia in Talks to Manufacture Blackwell AI Chips at Arizona Plant

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is reportedly in discussions with Nvidia to produce its powerful Blackwell AI chips at TSMC's upcoming facility in Arizona. Currently, these advanced chips, launched in March and renowned for their generative AI and accelerated computing capabilities, are manufactured in TSMC’s Taiwan plants. If the deal proceeds, it would mark a significant step for domestic semiconductor production in the U.S.
TSMC's Arizona facility, slated to begin large-scale production next year, has already secured clients like Apple and AMD. However, while initial manufacturing for the Blackwell chips may occur in Arizona, advanced packaging—essential for the chips' final assembly—will still be handled in Taiwan. This is due to the Arizona facility's current lack of Chip-on-Wafer-on-Substrate (CoWoS) technology.
The development aligns with broader U.S. efforts to strengthen its semiconductor industry. TSMC is investing heavily in its Arizona operations, supported by a $6.6 billion subsidy from the U.S. government and $5 billion in low-interest loans. The company has also committed to increasing its total investment to $65 billion and building a third plant by 2030.
This collaboration signals not only growth for TSMC’s U.S. operations but also a strategic partnership that could solidify America’s role in global AI and semiconductor markets.
